Higher impact through open science — Open Discovery is a complete reimagination of how academic science works. We reward scientists for openly sharing their ideas, data, software, and detailed research methods. We reward open collaboration with peers over the Internet. The result is a much more open collaborative model that produces higher impact and an acceleration of scientific progress.
Funding for open projects — Open Discovery’s business model is to partner with science funders and wealthy individuals to provide funding for open research projects. We’re looking for researchers who want to lead open research projects, and projects that would benefit from having a worldwide community of scientists following along and sharing insights.
Recognition amongst peers — Open Discovery gives scientists an opportunity for recognition with each comment/contribution they make. Impact is measured by peer assessment — weighted according to who is most respected within the community.
Monetary payouts — In addition to peer recognition, valuable contributions are rewarded by monetary payouts. Open Discovery pays scientists based on peer assessment of the value of the ideas and insights they share. We intend to make it so that (if someone wanted to) they could have a lucrative career purely by publicly sharing their insights into other people’s research.
Scholarly contribution — While we’re building a new incentive system, we’re also doing our best to integrate with existing systems. For example, we make it easy to cite the existing literature by DOI, we make Open Discovery projects & discussions themselves citable, and we limit participation to legitimate scientists and the people they respect.
